Hello and welcome back to this Stop Smoking Audio series,

“The History of Smoking”

Tobacco in its original state is native only to the Americas . Evidence shows that it was growing as early as 6000 BC. People started using the leaves of the tobacco plant for smoking and chewing in 1000 BC. Christopher Columbus discovered tobacco in 1492. Rodrigo de Jerez became the first European smoker in history by taking a puff of the New World's version of the cigar in Cuba in 1493 AD. In 1564 tobacco was introduced to England , and in 1600, Sir Walter Raleigh persuaded Queen Elizabeth to try smoking.

From then on the use of tobacco escalated across the world. In 1832, the cigarette was invented by an Egyptian artilleryman during the siege of Acre . The Egyptian's cannon crew had improved their rate of fire by rolling gunpowder in paper tubes, and were rewarded with a pound of tobacco. Having no pipe with which to smoke the tobacco, they rolled the pipe tobacco in the paper tubes. It immediately became popular and manufactured cigarettes appeared in the United States . The brand most popular was called Bill Durham, with 90% of the market. The first American cigarette factory opened in 1864 and produced 20 million cigarettes annually.

By the 1900's 3.5 billion cigarettes are sold annually and four in five American men are smoking. This is despite a strong anti smoking activity existing in 43 of the 45 states. 1902 saw the introduction of the first cigarette designed for women. Tiny Philip Morris set up a corporation in New York to sell its British brands, one of which was a cigarette named Marlborough , which featured a red tip to hide lipstick marks.

Cigarette smoking became a multi million-dollar industry after the introduction of advertising. In 1940, adult Americans were smoking over 2,500 cigarettes per person per year, twice the consumption of 1930. Popular brands were Camel, Lucky Strike, Chesterfield , Raleigh and Old Gold. By 2002, despite scientific evidence to prove that smoking kills, 45.8 million adults were smokers in the USA . In the 20 th century 100 million, (0.1 billion) deaths were from smoking.

Is that enough? ONE BILLION deaths in a century? Should we compare that to how many people died in two of the biggest wars the world has ever seen? Shall we compare that to murders and accidental deaths? The fact is - NOTHING else even comes close to that figure. Yet smoking is still not only legal, but still promoted, still generating profits and revenue for corporations and governments alike, and still killing millions of people. You would have thought that after the floodgates of information opened many years ago, and the public became informed of the certain dangers of smoking, that people would stop smoking. But that is not the case. And still today 3000 teenagers take up smoking every single day in the U.S. alone. That's around 1.1 million NEW smokers every year just in the U.S. and that means the tobacco companies will continue to profit well into the future and the governments will continue to gain huge revenues from it. So that is why it has continued despite globally proven knowledge that it is a KILLER habit - because it makes MONEY, plain and simple.

You see, no matter what you like to think about your society and your government ‘caring' for its citizens, it simply is not true when it comes to tobacco. Or at least, it is not true if it gets in the way of money. And it does, so they prefer to allow people to die than to lose these massive revenues. What - does that shock you? Does that make you uncomfortable? Well it should, but it is true nonetheless. Compare it to any other killer drug, habit, or activity with only a percentage of the death risks, and the government will ban it in an instant. Why? Because NEW drugs and dangers don't have a history and established network of profiteering behind them, at least not for those with the power to pass legislation to ban or permit them.

No folks, the fact is, if you want to live longer, if you want to be healthier, if you want more money in your OWN pocket instead of your government's, YOU have to bring about the change for yourself. And the way to do this is to stop smoking for good, right now, today. There is just no other way of doing it. The only moment that counts is this one. The only moment you have any control over is this one as you sit and read this.

So, get your head straight, and get your life in gear. Stop the tobacco, before tobacco stops YOU.

Til next time….
