Quit Smoking Right Now

“Document Your Habit”

Do you know exactly how much you smoke? Most likely you have a general idea based on how many days your cigs last before buying your next carton or pack. But I would guess that you don't know how many exactly per day or when you smoke the most on any given day. One way to begin the road to quitting smoking for good is to create a calendar with the times throughout the day that you smoke. It is simple enough to do if you make it as easy as possible. Buy a small notebook or calendar that you can carry in your pocket or purse and write down the time when you have a cigarette on whatever day it happens to be. If you actually keep a good record you will be able to identify many aspects of your addictive habit that you probably never even thought of before.

One such eye opening discovery is finding out just how many cigarettes you smoke on a given day. This is usually much more than you ever thought. Another interesting thing is identifying when you smoke the most. If you are like most people there are certain times in the day when you smoke more than other times. Often, there are certain days that a person smokes more than other days. Once you have identified these “peak times” you can start consciously attempting to avoid these peak times or to change your pattern at those times. This insight usually leads to the realization that you smoke more because of external factors in your life than as the result of addiction. You can also begin the process of setting goals for the amount of cigarettes you smoke a day or a week. The ultimate goal is zero cigarettes a week but for most smokers just cutting down is a positive step that will eventually lead to an easier transition to the non-smoking life.
