“Dealing With Stress”

If you asked a smoker why it is that he/she smokes by far the most common response would be, “to relieve stress.” In addition, I would bet that almost every smoker has said something similar to the following during a stressful situation, “I have got to have a cigarette!” Fortunately, this is an aspect of the smoking addiction that you can change relatively easily with a little work. First of all, you need to ask yourself, “Does smoking really help me deal with stress or a stressful situation?” The answer is no, in fact, biologically it just makes it worse. When you are under stress the adrenaline is already pumping and your body is preparing for the worst. If you add nicotine to this situation all you are doing is artificially ramping up your body to a fever pitch. This is exactly the opposite of what you need to deal with a stressful situation.

One of the best ways to deal with a stressful situation is to slow down and take some deep breaths. Take this time to think about the issue you are dealing with and brainstorm ideas for resolution. Instead of reaching for you cigarettes you should reach for a piece of paper and write these ideas down. Another alternative is to stop, much like you would for a cigarette, and instead of smoking just walk and think about the situation. The most important thing to keep in mind during these times is that smoking is not going to help you in any way. It is not the solution, it never was, it never will be and you KNOW IT!

…to your freedom…
