“Cold Turkey” Many ex-smokers that I have talked to about how they finally ended up quitting stated that the only way they were able to be successful, was to just quit. This method is commonly known as quitting “cold turkey.” This strategy works for many people because it is a clean break with no exceptions. You should consider this if you are a heavy smoker and haven't had much luck with a gradual step down in usage. This doesn't mean that if you are a heavy smoker you can't quit by gradually lowering your cigarette usage. However, the problem most people encounter with the step down method is that it allows an addict to continue the addiction. In most cases, this just ends up as an excuse to keep smoking in some fashion thus prolonging the habit.
The point of this article is that if you have tried to quit by cutting down your intake and are still smoking, then it is time to try something else. The “cold turkey” method is very simple and the whole principal is based on an absolute definitive rule of no more cigarettes. There are no more excuses for lighting up. You can tell yourself that you are working towards a goal of no smoking, but are you really? I would bet that you have other motivations deep down. So, if you are still prolonging your habit by telling yourself that you are gradually cutting down to zero, maybe you should go “cold turkey” right now and pull the plug on your smoking addiction life support system.
