“Smoking and skin aging”

One third of the world's population older than 15 years of age are smokers. This corresponds to 1.2 billion people. As a result of smoking, 500 million people will die.

Your skin is also seriously affected by smoking. Cigarette smoke contains over 4000 toxic substances, with nicotine being the most harmful. Nicotine causes vasoconstriction which is the narrowing or in severe cases, almost complete closure of your blood vessels such as veins and arteries, and that results in decreased blood flow.

In fact one single cigarette normally results in skin vasoconstriction for more than 90 minutes. Tissue Ischemia is the name given to tissue damaged by the reduction in blood and oxygen supply over a prolonged period of time. Chronic tissue ischemia causes damage to the elastic fibres in the skin which is what gives way to ‘older' or more weathered looking skin.

Research shows that a person who smokes 10 or more cigarettes a day for a minimum of 10 years is more likely to have deeply wrinkled, leathery skin than a non smoker. Smokers also develop a yellowish colour to their complexion. A study carried out in 2002 showed that wrinkling, although not visible to the naked eye, can be seen under a microscope in smokers as young as 20 years old. Women who smoke have a paler skin tone, dark circles under their eyes and premature wrinkling.

Cigarette smoking is one of the skin's worst enemies. Studies show that the skin of smokers ages twice as fast after 30 years old, than the skin of non smokers. If you stop smoking now then these signs can be greatly diminished. Even if you have smoked for many years you will notice improved skin tone when you quit smoking. Yet another reason to do the right thing and finally get rid of this killer habit from your life completely.
