Text Version: Hello and welcome back to this Stop Smoking Audio series,
How will I feel when I give up?
To date over 60 million people in the USA alone have given up smoking. The percentage of the adult smoking population was 60%; this is now down to 28%. All sorts of people, from all walks of life have successfully kicked the habit and are now enjoying a non-smoking lifestyle.
One question often asked when giving up smoking is, “how will I feel.” The truthful answer is somewhere between awful and fantastic. In other words everyone feels different, and even more strange, one person may feel totally different each time they attempt to quit smoking. The last time I quit, (which was the first and last time I really quit for ever!) I felt absolutely great, and only had one or two mild cravings, so you just don't know how you are going to feel until you go for it and stop smoking. Having said all that, many people will feel some horrible feelings at first. Not only is nicotine one of the world's most addictive substances, the psychological cravings will try to take over your life to get you back on the drug as quickly as possible, and for every day you resist falling victim to that, you gain strength and nicotine loses strength. When you quit you will experience withdrawal symptoms. You may feel irritable and stressed, have mood swings, poor concentration, insomnia, and feel restless and depressed. You may develop a cough as your lungs try to rid themselves of the toxins from inhaling cigarette smoke. You may feel tired and lack energy and motivation. Be strong and have faith, these symptoms do not last long and soon you will be feeling so much better as your body regains health and vitality.
The worst feeling some people experience is loss. You mourn for that stick of tobacco that has been acting as your friend for so long. You feel deprived of something and harbour feelings of emptiness. You feel as if you will never be able to enjoy yourself again and you cannot imagine how you are going to enjoy a night out without a cigarette to relax you. Be brutally honest! You know that each cigarette that you smoked has been systemically destroying your health and leading you to an early grave, so acknowledge that each time you think about how you need a cigarette, you KNOW it is just a killer addiction taking hold of you again, and all you have to do is win each small battle, and the war is yours. The prize is enormous so don't stop winning those tiny battles.
Deal with your feelings by changing your lifestyle. Join a gym or take up a new sport. Treat yourself to a weekend break or a long relaxing holiday with all the cash that you are saving by not smoking. These negative feelings seem desperately important to you now but remember they are only “feelings.” They are NOT reality. Learn some relaxation techniques to calm yourself. Notice how your body is regaining its health. You are now in control of your life and not being controlled by a cigarette. Smoking has been your security blanket that ultimately would have become your shroud. That is the real nasty truth which all smokers must be aware of, and please email a link to this page to anyone you know who smokes, so that they can listen to this and be as aware of this as you are now.
Feel proud that you are free from the social stigma of smoking and feel proud that you have gained control of your life.
