A powerful piece of advice I once learned, came from a meditation expert who helped people give up smoking through meditation and visualization.

 

Do some deep breathing each day for 3 to 5 minutes per session. Breathe in through your nose very slowly, and try to imagine filling your stomach with air before your lungs and chest. When you breath in like this, your chest should not physically move at all, just your stomach area should swell at first and only when this area is full, you will feel that your chest is filling with air. This is how professional opera singers breathe in order to hold extremely long notes. Most of us don't use all the breathing capacity we have and smokers are particularly guilty of this. What you are doing when you breathe in this way is filling your lungs with air right down to the bottom first, near your diaphragm and then you are filling them upwards towards the top. You will find you can hold your breath for much longer like this, and this is the beginning of any meditation session.

Once you have mastered this after a few goes, you should hold the breath for a few seconds, ten or twenty if you can, and then VERY SLOWLY exhale through your mouth and in a very controlled manner. Try doing your breathing with your eyes closed and while doing so, begin to visualize life in a few years time without tobacco. For example picture yourself springing out of bed in the morning to greet the day, and then you get on your bike and go for a nice long ride while your lungs fill with fresh morning air. Picture yourself smiling more, smelling and tasting more foods, enjoying social occasions without endangering other peoples health and your own, and most of all, living the satisfaction that you are finally completely FREE of your addiction.

See yourself enjoying your swimming or your golf games. Feeling good when your children or grand children sit on your knee because you don't stink of tobacco smoke, and you are not harbouring all the dangerous chemicals which come with it.
See yourself turning down a cigarette that someone offers you. See yourself throwing all your cigarettes away, and winning a gold medal for doing so. Develop your own
creative visualizations. Visualization works. It really is a very very powerful technique and one which many of the world's top sporting heroes are getting involved in now to take their game to a higher level.
