Hello and welcome back to this Stop Smoking Audio series,

Smoking and weight gain.”

One of the obstacles facing smokers that are trying to quit is weight gain. Three out of four people surveyed said that their weight increased after kicking the habit. This can be from just a few pounds to over a stone. Weight gain is one of the reasons that cause people to start smoking again, especially women.

The fear of gaining weight is a major issue for cigarette smokers, but putting on a few pounds pales into insignificance when you see the health benefits as your body recovers from cigarette smoking. Nicotine affects the activity of serotonin and dopamine, these are substances that control neural transmission in the brain and turn appetite on or off. Nicotine raises the activity of these substances so after smoking a cigarette, you feel less hungry. Nicotine also acts as a stimulant and a sedative, so when you cease smoking your body's metabolism slows. Even if you eat the same amount of calories after you quit smoking, the body uses less of them to perform normal functions and so stores more calories as fat. However with your new found energy levels, and your ability to breathe more efficiently, exercise becomes a pleasure rather than a chore, so take advantage of that and start putting your food to good use for a change!

Another reason for putting on weight is that your taste and smell senses return, which makes food more enjoyable. Food is not just a source of nutrition as it is naturally intended. It is also used as a comforter, in exactly the same way a cigarette would relax you. When nicotine is withdrawn some people use food to fill the gap and keep their hands busy. Signs of withdrawal from cigarette smoking are irritability and restlessness. Subconsciously your hand reaches for food to fill the void.

There are ways to overcome these empty feelings. The first is to set yourself new goals. Take up a form of sport, or any outdoor hobby such as painting, bird watching, or walking. Plan healthy meals, and enjoy cooking them. To stop yourself snacking on fatty foods, clear the cupboards of biscuits, cakes, and sweet things. Replace these with healthy options. Prepare some bowls of small pieces of fruit, nuts or seeds, such as pumpkin or sunflower seeds. These are great for nibbling on and will keep your hands busy. Dried fruits, sultanas, raisins, apricots and figs are all satisfying healthy alternatives.

Even if you do gain a few pounds, it will not be permanent. Your body needs time to heal itself and get rid of all the toxins it has been subjected to. Pamper yourself with the money you save by not smoking. Indulge yourself with a weekend break, visit a spa and have a massage, or treat yourself to a new weekend hobby like playing golf or buying new clothes.

Many people ‘use' weight gain as an easy excuse to avoid giving up smoking. The fact is that in our modern societies, being overweight is looked down on more than actively killing yourself and those around you by smoking. Crazy? Yes. But thanks largely to Hollywood and the media, that's just the way it is. It is the same nonsense logic which dictates that school kids will get more friends and more ‘respect' from their piers by carrying a gun or a knife, rather than doing really well in college exams. It is backwards, but it is driven that way by those with the money, power and desire to create and change public opinion. Ask yourself how many films you have seen, or comedy shows or any other TV show where somebody who smokes is laughed at, humiliated and ridiculed by others for being such an idiot? No, I haven't seen any either. But it doesn't take more than one evening to find an overweight person on the TV being looked down on or mocked in some way. But you have to change this in your mind. Weight is not unhealthy, obesity is unhealthy. A little extra few pounds could actually be the weight you should be, and it may have been your drug intake while smoking which gave you a false impression of what your ‘normal' weight should be.

Smoking on the other hand is not just unhealthy, IT IS FATAL. Make the choice, make it with intelligence and evidence, not with media or public opinion in mind. Besides, once you are free of smoking, you will have more than enough strength to tackle something as trivial as a few pounds of cellulite, which will disappear of their own accord within a few months anyway in most cases.

A few extra pounds will not kill you, Smoking WILL. Give it up now.
