Text Version: Hello and welcome back to this Stop Smoking Audio series,
Smoking and the F.C.T.C.
The Framework Convention Tobacco Control treaty, (FCTC) bans tobacco advertising, promotion and sponsorship. It sets international standards to prevent Big Tobacco from meddling in health policies and has been hugely successful in changing the way tobacco companies do business in the countries that have accepted the treaty.
In May 2003, member countries of the World Health Organisation, (WHO) adopted the treaty, along with the Framework Convention Alliance, that consists of 250 organisations representing 90 countries around the world. The FCTC came into force on 27 th February 2005. 168 countries signed the treaty and have become Parties. The Ukraine became a Party on 6 th June 2006. The treaty still fights the combination of Big Tobacco and the Bush administration.
The treaty calls for a ban on tobacco advertising, promotion, and sponsorship. It calls for the compulsory use of health warnings covering at least 30% of the display area of the packaging. The implementing of measures to tackle the illicit trade of tobacco products. To ban misleading descriptors such as, “light” or “mild”. To raise tobacco taxes. To provide smoke free public places. To consider litigation to hold the tobacco industry liable for it's wrong doings. Many, many organisations, pressure groups and countries worldwide embrace the Framework Convention Tobacco Control Treaty. The United States has supported the interests of the tobacco giants, rather than the global public health for too long. By giving up smoking you too can help in the fight to save millions of lives and make your own voice heard, by shouting proudly the words “I DO NOT SMOKE”
