Smoking's relationship with Bad breath and Oral Cancer

Smoking causes bad breath for several reasons. The tar and nicotine content of cigarettes build up in the mouth on surfaces such as the teeth, tongue and the sides of the cheeks. Inhaling cigarette smoke dries the mouth as saliva flow is reduced, which in turn leads to the growth of bacteria that cause bad breath. Smoking also is the cause of gum disease and sinus conditions, both of which are major factors in causing bad breath. Inhaling cigarette smoke causes the staining of the teeth that is difficult to remove even with regular brushing. The tongue becomes brown and sometimes furry, resulting in foul smelling breath. To test just how bad your mouth smells; lick the inside of your wrist for about five seconds. Wait for thirty seconds and then smell your wrist. That awful pong is a direct result of your smoking habit. You may not notice when your breath smells but your friends do. Because smoking reduces blood flow to the gums and cuts off the supply of nutrients to the mouth, gum disease occurs. Vitamin C is needed in the mouth for the gums to stay healthy and smoking reduces your vitamin c levels by a whopping 50%.

Smoking also raises the temperature within the mouth, which damages and kills oral tissue. The cancer causing compounds found in cigarettes, plus the lack of vitamin C produces oral cancer. Smokers are up to 18 times more likely to develop oral cancer than non-smokers. Shall I say that again, in case you missed that number?! Smokers are EIGHTEEN TIMES MORE LIKELY to develop oral cancer than Non-Smokers. In other words if you are a smoker and you stand in a room with 17 other people, it is MORE LIKELY that cancer will occur in your mouth than in ALL of the 17 other mouths in that room combined. This is just one example of the immense risks of smoking.

More people in America die from oral cancer than from brain, thyroid, cervical, and other well - known cancers. The survival rate is low because oral cancer remains undetected until the cancer is in an advanced stage. Sadly the numbers of young people contracting oral cancer are rising, along with the numbers of teenagers taking up smoking.
