…to your freedom…
Text Version: Hello and welcome back to this Stop Smoking Audio series, This week I want to talk about YOU. Not about smoking or the dangers of smoking, but about you….and before I do I would like to ask you to do me a favour if you can. I would like you to think back to when you were in your teens, and if possible to find a piece of music or a song which reminds you of those times. However old you are, everyone has a list of songs which take them back to younger days, whether it is Elvis or the Beatles, just find something which you know you used to listen to when you were in your late teens and play it now while you listen to me talking. You can press the pause button while you do that. So hopefully you have music playing now which will take you back mentally to a time when the whole world was seemingly at your feet, and you had countless goals and dreams. Stop reading for a few seconds, close your eyes and drift back in time to try to remember what your biggest goals were in life. Whether you wanted to be a pop star, or an investment banker, a farmer, or a surfer for the rest of your life, it doesn't matter, just fix your eyes on that vision you used to have all those years ago.
Now don't you feel like a failure? Unless you are one of the almost non-existent minority who did achieve all their hopes and dreams (and if so you wouldn't be a smoker anyway!!) then you no doubt have a strong sense of disappointment and failure right now.
Now look at what you HAVE achieved in your life. Whether it is raising a strong healthy child, making people's lives more fun in some way, raising money for a charity, finding a religion or whatever else you are proud of, we all have things we have achieved. Smoking is, and always will be, one of those things you look back on as being part of the first list, the list of disappointments and failures. Right now, right here today, you have the opportunity to permanently move it from being on the depressing list of regrets, to the other list full of successes and achievements. I am sure you didn't grow up with hopes and dreams of being a life long smoker. This is not something anybody sets their sights on from childhood. And in actual fact it is proven to reduce drive and energy levels enough that it is directly to blame for some of the other failures you have under your belt. By moving it to the list of targets achieved, which can be done by you never lighting another cigarette, you will find that many other failures on your list begin to get moved to the other list too. And through this process, you will gain strength and motivation to tackle another challenge.
Almost everyone I have spoken to after they have quit smoking has a similar story to tell about how they suddenly managed to ‘find time' to get those jobs done around the house, or to tidy up their office or many other things. Of course they didn't have more time at all, what they had was more inspiration and it is typical of ex-smokers that they very often become very active and efficient people because they suddenly see clarity in their mind without nicotine blurring everything as it has done for so many years. Smoking has a habit of dragging you down, lowering your motivation, and trying its hardest to prevent you achieving anything worthwhile. This is why when you stop smoking you don't just get rid of the addiction, the smell, and the costs of cigarettes. No, you get something far greater out of the deal, you get your entire life turned around day by day after you quit.
Smoking is a downwards spiral, quitting is an upwards one, which begins on a few days of ‘feeling' like you are going down, but once you get past the 72 hour milestone you suddenly go rocketing upwards and along with that your energy levels improve, your zest for life comes back and it all has a knock on effect making each and every day easier and better than ever before, not to mention the fact that you are probably saving yourself from an untimely and painful death.
There really is no decision to make and no arguments to weigh up. Smoking kills every part of your life, until the final insult when it takes your life completely. You are worth more than that, your family are worth more than that, and the only thing which should be dying an early death is your addiction. QUIT NOW, RIGHT NOW.
