Hello and welcome back to this Stop Smoking Audio series,

Heart Attacks and Strokes

Smokers are TEN times more likely to die early from heart attacks or strokes. Yes you heard that right, YEN TIMES MORE LIKELY.

Each year, tobacco smoking accounts for approximately 20% of all heart disease deaths. Cigarette smoking is one of the three, non hereditary risk factors leading to Coronary Heart Disease according to the US Surgeon General. 80% of heart attacks in men under 45 are thought to be due to cigarette smoking. Men under 45 that are heavy smokers have 10 to 15 times the rate of fatal heart attacks than that of non - smokers. Light smokers also have an increased risk of Coronary Heart Disease. A study carried out in the US found that women who smoked only between 1 and 4 cigarettes a day had a 2.5 fold increase of fatal coronary heart disease.

Within one minute of inhaling cigarette smoke the heart rate starts to rise by as much as 30 %. Because smokers have increased blood cholesterol levels, they also have raised fibrinogen levels and platelet counts. This makes the blood stickier. The Carbon monoxide from cigarettes attaches itself to the haemoglobin more easily than the oxygen does, thereby reducing the amount of oxygen being carried in the blood. Blood flows less easily through the arteries already narrowed and blocked. The blood forms a thrombosis, (blood clot) which leads to heart attacks, a stroke or gangrene of the leg.

A stroke is what occurs when the blood and oxygen flow to the brain is stopped or interrupted due to a blocked or ruptured blood vessel. In the United Kingdom , 150,000 people suffer a stroke every single year, which causes around 67,000 deaths. I t is estimated that over 2 million people suffer a stroke annually worldwide, and there were 1.4 million new cases in 2005 in the United States alone. Every 45 seconds in the US , someone suffers a stroke. Stroke is the third most common cause of death in the UK after cancer and heart disease. Around a quarter of all deaths from stroke are directly linked to cigarette smoking. Smoking trebles your risk of suffering a stroke. There is also a proven relationship between the number of cigarettes smoked and the increases in risk as you smoke more tobacco.

The risk of suffering a stroke declines RAPIDLY after you stop smoking. Hence the reason we say:

IT IS NEVER TOO LATE TO QUIT SMOKING.

Til next time, and be sure to share this information with those you love.
