Hello and welcome back to this Stop Smoking Audio series,

  Smoking and Pregnancy

If all pregnant women in the United States stopped smoking there would be an estimated 11% reduction in stillbirths and a 5% reduction in newborn deaths.

Smoking during pregnancy almost doubles a woman's risk of having a low birth weight baby. Smoking slows the growth of the baby in the womb, which relies on receiving everything from its mother. The placenta and umbilical cord provide the baby with nutrients and oxygen. When the mother smokes, some of the oxygen in her blood has been replaced by carbon monoxide, so carries less oxygen to the baby. This causes the baby's heart rate to rise as it struggles to get enough oxygen. The toxins contained in cigarettes change the blood's ability to perform in a healthy manner. This affects the placenta and subsequently the baby.

Babies born to mothers that smoke are:

  • More likely to be born prematurely and have a low birth weight.
  • More likely to have Impaired lung functions.
  • TWICE as likely to suffer cot death.
  • Have more illnesses during the first year of life than babies born to non-smoking mothers.
  • Are susceptible to more diseases such as Asthma, ear infections and bronchitis.
  • Are more susceptible to allergies and brain disorders in later life
  • Are far more likely to become smokers themselves.

A recent survey carried out in the United Kingdom found that 200,000 women continued to smoke during pregnancy despite hard evidence proving that the risks to the unborn child are overwhelming. Dr Lesley Owen, a senior research manager at the Health Education Authority said, “The dangers of smoking during pregnancy are now well established. It really is never too late to give up smoking- even stopping in the final months of your pregnancy will help your baby.”

So, if you know anyone who smokes while pregnant, I think you have some information to give them. More importantly though, people are just not aware that the chemicals from smoking remain on your clothing for up to half an hour after having a cigarette. In other words, if a pregnant mother does not smoke but her partner does, and even if he goes outside to smoke (which is definitely a good idea if he insists on smoking at all) he will still do a lot of harm to both mother and child as soon as he comes near them, basically through bringing dangerous toxins into their breathing space which they absorb into their own blood stream after breathing them in. At the very least, anyone who smokes like this should have a heavy coat they pull over and zip up when they go out for a smoke, then at least they can take off that layer before coming back in, but of course the best idea is to…..GIVE IT UP, and choose life for both yourself and family. Please spread this information as almost everyone I meet is unaware of the dangers you carry on your clothes after smoking, and just popping outside is NOT enough.
